Capital Region First Day Hikes 2026

New York State’s 15th annual First Day Hikes program features over 125 guided events on January 1, 2026, hosted by NYS Parks, DEC, and the Canal Corporation. Parking fees are waived at participating sites, and hikes range from easy family strolls to moderate winter treks. Below, we’ve compiled a few options within easy driving distance of those in the Capital Region.

Thacher State Park

Location: 830 Thacher Park Road, Voorheesville, NY.
Details: Guided winter hikes at 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. from the main entrance. Family-friendly options on scenic trails along the escarpment with views of the Helderbergs.

Saratoga Spa State Park

Location: 1089 Route 9P, Saratoga Springs, NY.
Details: Guided hike starts at 10 AM from the Creekside Classroom, going through a variety of wooded areas and meadows.

Moreau Lake State Park

Location: 605 Old Saratoga Road, Gansevoort, NY.
Details: Family-friendly First Day Hike on lakefront and wooded trails. Event via official channels.

Location: 100 Grafton Lakes State Park Way, Cropseyville, NY.
Details: Three options including a 1-mile easy loop, a 2.5-mile moderate hike, and a more difficult 3-mile hike to Dickinson Hill Fire Tower.
