This state-run nature preserve, located in Delmar (just south of Albany), offers miles of trails. A brand-new interpretive center includes displays and even some actual animals for those of all ages to enjoy. The grounds are open daily from sunrise to center, while the visitor's center is open Monday-Saturday 9 AM-4:30 PM (except for state holidays).
Throughout the preserve, you'll find 10 miles of trails meandering through fields, into woods, and beside streams. While none of the trails cover very strenuous terrain (you do encounter some slight inclines in places), there are paths of all distances for various age and skill levels. Some trails are fully accessible to wheelchairs. You can also snowshoe or cross-country ski in the winter.
You can easily spend hours here exploring trails, seeing displays in the visitor center, enjoying lunch at a picnic table, and observing wildlife. Wildlife abounds in the park, with deer frequently visible, particularly in the morning hours, and many birds calling the area home.
If you haven't yet visited, take the time to venture to this place of solitude close to the hustle and bustle of New York's capital. It's a perfect stop, whether you just want to get outdoors or want a relaxing alternative to more strenuous hiking.
